„We never love anyone. Not really. We only love our idea of another person. It is some conception of our own that we love. We love ourselves, in fact.“

„We never love someone. We just love the idea we have of someone. It's a concept of ours - summing up, ourselves - that we love.“

—  Fernando Pessoa, kniha The Book of Disquiet
The Book of Disquiet, Original: Nunca amamos niguém. Amamos, tão-somente, a ideia que fazemos de alguém. É a um conceito nosso — em suma, é a nós mesmos — que amamos. Ibid., p. 125

„The remarkable thing is that we really love our neighbor as ourselves“

—  Eric Hoffer American philosopher 1898 - 1983
The Passionate State Of Mind, and Other Aphorisms (1955), Context: The remarkable thing is that we really love our neighbor as ourselves: we do unto others as we do unto ourselves. We hate others when we hate ourselves. We are tolerant toward others when we tolerate ourselves. We forgive others when we forgive ourselves. We are prone to sacrifice others when we are ready to sacrifice ourselves. It is not love of self but hatred of self which is at the root of the troubles that afflict our world. Section 100

„Love personalizes all that it loves. Only by personalizing it can we fall in love with an idea.“

—  Miguel de Unamuno 19th-20th century Spanish writer and philosopher 1864 - 1936
The Tragic Sense of Life (1913), VII : Love, Suffering, Pity, Context: Consciousness (conscientia) is participated knowledge, is co-feeling, and co-feeling is com-passion. Love personalizes all that it loves. Only by personalizing it can we fall in love with an idea. And when love is so great and so vital, so strong and so overflowing, that it loves everything, then it personalizes everything and discovers that the total All, that the Universe, is also a person possessing a Consciousness, a Consciousness which in its turn suffers, pities, and loves, and therefore is consciousness. And this Consciousness of the Universe, which a love, personalizing all that it loves, discovers, is what we call God.
