„Yesterday I visited Rotterdam for a while... It is a beautiful city. Always turbulent, dirty and picturesque, especially the vest and the harbor-neighborhoods. For the newer city I don't care at all.“

—  George Hendrik Breitner Dutch painter and photographer 1857 - 1923

Quote from Breitner's letter to A. P. van Stolk, The Hague, 8 Febr. 1882; as cited in Breitner en Parijs' – master-thesis 9928758 https://dspace.library.uu.nl/handle/1874/8382], by Jacobine Wieringa, Faculty of Humanities Theses, Utrecht, (translation from the original Dutch, Fons Heijnsbroek), p. 10

„It had people from all over the country and the world. The great thing about Bombay as a city was it was a magnet for anybody with talent, or ambition or hunger, or beauty, or intelligence.“

—  Jeet Thayil Indian writer 1959

On the variety of characters portrayed in his Narcopolis.
Jeet Thayil on why 'Where are you from?' is a complicated question for all of us
Kontext: It had people from all over the country and the world. The great thing about Bombay as a city was it was a magnet for anybody with talent, or ambition or hunger, or beauty, or intelligence. If you had any of these things and you wanted to make something of yourself, you went to Bombay and the city would reward you. I think all of that changed in 1992, when the last big riots happened in Bombay between Hindus and Muslims. Now when I go back to the city and I look at it, I can see the kind of profound impact that those riots had, and how it's changed the character of the city, and in such a profound way that I don't think it will ever change back to what it was before '92.

„This city is a completely female city. Female town. Beijing is male. All rough and politics. Shanghai is more delicate. Money talks. Beautiful. I had enough rough. I need details. Specially because (I am) a lady. I need city.“

—  Jin Xing

Cited in: SanSan Kwan, Kinesthetic City: Dance and Movement in Chinese Urban Spaces, 2013 p. xxx; Talking about Shanghai
Text originate from a French-made documentary, where "Jin herself associated her (definitely female) identity with the city" of Shanghai.

„All is madness. And there is no one who will dare to rise and say that all is not madness, and that the future does not so appear — as fatal and unchangeable as a memory.“

—  Henri Barbusse French novelist 1873 - 1935

Light (1919), Ch. XVI - De Profundis Clamavi
Kontext: All is madness. And there is no one who will dare to rise and say that all is not madness, and that the future does not so appear — as fatal and unchangeable as a memory.
But how many men will there be who will dare, in face of the universal deluge which will be at the end as it was in the beginning, to get up and cry "No!" who will pronounce the terrible and irrefutable issue: —
"No! The interests of the people and the interests of all their present overlords are not the same.
