David Bowie citáty a výroky

„Kupodivu to ve skutečnosti nebyl Lou Reed, kdo mě přitahoval ke skupině The Velvet Underground. Nenapadá mě nikdo děsivnější a temnější. Lou Reed je v porovnání s ním sborový zpěvák.“

David Bowie

Originál: (en) Oddly, it was not really Lou Reed who attracted me to the Velvet. To me, the sound of the band was John Cale. That was confirmed a few years later when I worked with Lou on Transformer. John was the subversive element of the band, one of the most underrated musicians in rock history. That guy is a danger, a true character. I cannot think of anybody more terrifying and dark. Lou Reed is a choirboy compared to him.

„Když jsem na scéně, cítím se spíš jako herec než jako rockový umělec. Jako rockový umělec se cítím moc málokdy. Nemyslím si, že by to bylo tak úplně povolání, hrát rock and roll.“

„Už dávno jsem přestal své písně vysvětlovat.“

Dávám přednost tomu, že si poslechnu, co o nich říkají jiní. Jako bych prostě třídil rajčata…

David Bowie: Citáty anglicky

“Steel on the skyline
Sky made of glass
Made for a real world
All things must pass”

David Bowie

"Heathen (The Rays)"
Song lyrics, Heathen (2002)
Kontext: Steel on the skyline
Sky made of glass
Made for a real world
All things must pass
Ooo
Waiting for something
Looking for someone
Is there no reason?

“The words just jolly it along. It's always been my way of expressing what for me is inexpressible by any other means.”

David Bowie

Livewire interview (2002)
Kontext: I had to resign myself, many years ago, that I'm not too articulate when it comes to explaining how I feel about things. But my music does it for me, it really does. There, in the chords and melodies, is everything I want to say. The words just jolly it along. It's always been my way of expressing what for me is inexpressible by any other means.
What is very enlightening for me right now is that I sense that I'm arriving at a place of peace with my writing that I've never experienced before. I think I'm going to be writing some of the most worthwhile things that I've ever written in the coming years. I'm very confident and trusting in my abilities right now. But I've got to think of myself as the luckiest guy. Robert Johnson only had one album's worth of work as his legacy. That's all that life allowed him.

“And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations.
They're quite aware of what they're going through.”

David Bowie

Changes
Song lyrics, Hunky Dory (1971)
Kontext: I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence.
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same.
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations.
They're quite aware of what they're going through.

“I'm an instant star. Just add water and stir.”

“Heathenism is a state of mind. You can take it that I'm referring to one who does not see his world. He has no mental light. He destroys almost unwittingly.”

David Bowie

Livewire interview (2002)
Kontext: Heathenism is a state of mind. You can take it that I'm referring to one who does not see his world. He has no mental light. He destroys almost unwittingly. He cannot feel any Gods' presence in his life. He is the 21st century man. However, there's no theme or concept behind Heathen, just a number of songs but somehow there is a thread that runs through it that is quite as strong as any of my thematic type albums.

“Look up here, I’m in heaven
I’ve got scars that can’t be seen
I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen
Everybody knows me now”
