Leonard Susskind je profesorem teoretické fyziky na Stanfordově univerzitě a ředitelem Stanfordského institutu pro teoretickou fyziku. Mezi oblasti jeho výzkumu patří teorie strun, kvantová teorie pole, kvantová statistická mechanika a kvantová kosmologie. Je členem Národní akademie věd USA, a Americké akademie umění a věd, přidruženým členem fakulty Kanadského Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics a profesorem na Korea Institute for Advanced Study.Susskind je všeobecně považován za jednoho z tvůrců teorie strun,; nezávisle na kolezích představil myšlenku, že částice mohou být ve skutečnosti stavy excitace relativistických strun. V roce 1995 podal rovněž přesnou interpretaci holografického principu na základě teorie strun a v roce 2003 jako první představil myšlenku krajiny teorie strun.V roce 1998 získal Sakuraiovu cenu.
