Ratko Mladić byl dlouholetým důstojníkem jugoslávské armády působícím postupně v Makedonii, jihosrbském Kosovu a chorvatském Kninu. Zde ho zastihla občanská válka a zasáhl do bojů proti chorvatským jednotkám. Posléze se stal velitelem nově vzniklé bosenskosrbské armády Republiky srbské, v níž bojoval mezi lety 1992 a 1995. 22. listopadu 2017 byl Mezinárodním trestním tribunálem pro bývalou Jugoslávii za genocidu, válečné zločiny a zločiny proti lidskosti, zejména v souvislosti s masakrem ve Srebrenici, odsouzen k trestu doživotního odnětí svobody.
