„Každý člověk ve svém životě musí přijímat postoje. Když lidé říkají: „Aha, je to hudebník, proč by měl mluvit o politice?“, je to hloupé. Já jsem hrál koncert proti italskému fašismu v La Scale. Bylo to v době voleb a fašisté byli velmi silní. V Itálii je opozicí fašismu komunismus, ale není takový jako v Americe. Já sám jsem nepatřil do žádné strany. Volil jsem komunisty prostě proto, že byli opozicí fašistům. Ale nesouhlasím s italským ani s ruským komunismem v mnoha věcech. Moje linie je jasná. Jsem pro svobodu. Proti všemu, co není pro svobodu, protestuji.“

I did a concert against fascism in Italy at La Scala. It was at the time of the election, and the fascists were very strong. In Italy, the opposition to fascism is communism, but it is not like it is in America. I myself, however, belong to no party. I voted for the Communists simply because they were the opposition to the fascists. But I disagree with both Italian and Russian communism on many things. My line is very clear. I am for freedom. Everything that is not for freedom I protest.
