Robert Anson Heinlein byl jeden z nejvlivnějších a nejkontroverznějších spisovatelů science fiction. Společně s A. C. Clarkem a Isaacem Asimovem byli v americké literatuře známi jako „Velká trojice science fiction“. Byl prvním spisovatelem sci-fi, který pronikl i do nefantastických magazínů. Hlavní témata jeho práce byla sociální: radikální individualismus, svobodná vůle, náboženství, vztah mezi fyzickou a emocionální láskou a spekulace o poněkud neortodoxních rodinných vztazích.
