Fred Astaire, vlastním jménem Frederick Austerlitz byl americký zpěvák, herec, choreograf a tanečník.

Pocházel z rodiny rakouských přistěhovalců. Již od svého dětství rád tancoval, nejprve vytvořil taneční dvojici se svojí sestrou Adélou, jež chodila do taneční školy a s níž od roku 1917 až do roku 1932 veřejně vystupoval, mimo jiné i na Broadwayi.

Poté, co se sestra provdala byl nucen hledat novou taneční partnerku. Později vytvořil legendární velmi slavný taneční pár s Ginger Rogersovou, se kterou v letech 1932 až 1939 natočil celou sériii jednoduchých filmových muzikálů resp. lehkých výpravných tanečních show.

Po druhé světové válce se spíše uplatňoval jakožto tančící a zpívající herec s různými partnerkami. Po celý život byl velice znám svým velkým perfekcionalismem a vysokou profesionalitou.

Mezi jeho nejznámější poválečné filmové role patří jedna z hlavních rolí v muzikálu Divotvorný hrnec nebo role podvodníka ve snímku Skleněné peklo. Wikipedia
