Mary Ann Evansová, v literatuře známá pod pseudonymem George Eliot, byla anglická spisovatelka, novinářka a překladatelka, jedna z nejvýznamnějších autorek viktoriánského období. Ve své době pobouřila veřejnost nelegitimním vztahem se spisovatelem a Goethovým životopiscem Georgem Henry Lewesem. První její prací byly překlady německých filozofů Davida Strausse a Ludwiga Feuerbacha, o kterých se tenkrát velmi diskutovalo.
