James Thomson byl skotský preromantický básník a dramatik.

V Edinburghu studoval na kněze, ale roku 1725 odešel do Londýna, kde se plně věnoval literatuře. Jeho nejznámějšími díly je rozsáhlá báseň Roční časové opěvující přírodu, alegorická báseň Hrad indolence a maškarní hra Král Alfred , kterou Thomson napsal společně se svým přítelem Davidem Malletem a ze které pochází óda Vládni, Británie! , kterou zhudebnil Thomas Arne a která se stala britskou vlasteneckou písní.
