Sir Thomas Browne byl anglický lékař, básník a filozof, známý především svou knihou úvah Religio Medici, kterou definoval jako "soukromé pokusy určené sobě samému", jež nejprve dával číst v rukopisech úzkému kruhu přátel. Kniha vyšla bez jeho svolení roku 1642, on pak připravil autorizovanou verzi roku 1643. Po mimořádném úspěchu knihy, Browne sepsal rozsáhlejší spis Pseudodoxia Epidemica, knihu, jež vyšla roku 1646, a která je známa též jako Browneovy všeobecné omyly, neboť v ní vyvrací řadu pověr a přesvědčení, jež žily v obecném povědomí. V roce 1658 vydal svou třetí knihu, pojednání o starožitných předmětech a zahradách. Posmrtně, roku 1690, vyšel ještě text A Letter to a Friend, Upon occasion of the Death of his Intimate Friend. Roku 1671 ho Karel II. povýšil do šlechtického stavu. Za kontroverzní je v jeho životopisu považována jeho účast na čarodějnickém procesu v roce 1664, kdy svědčil proti dvěma ženám obviněným z čarodějnictví.
