Emily Dickinsonová byla americká básnířka 19. století, avšak povahou poezie a svým osobním apelem byla roku 1930 označena britským básníkem a kritikem za „nejsoučasnější, nejživější z básníků". Celé její dílo s výjimkou 13 básní bylo objeveno a vydáno až po její smrti. Teprve ve 20. století začaly vycházet její básně v původním, neupraveném znění. Narodila se a zemřela v Amherstu ve státě Massachusetts. Přestože její rodina zaujímala významné místo ve společnosti, Emily žila a tvořila v samotě.
