„Často jsem přemýšlel, že jedno z velkých tajemství oné podivuhodné pocty, kterou Pán Bůh udělil člověku, který není v našem obecenství (narážím na pana Charlese Spurgeona), je ona neobyčejná odvaha a smělost, se kterou vstupuje na kazatelnu, aby k lidem mluvit o jejich hříších a jejich duších. „Jsme-li praví křesťané, nemáme očekávat, že na naší cestě do nebe půjde vše snadno. Nemáme to pokládat za něco divného, musíme-li podstoupit nemoce, škody, ztráty a zklamání, stejně jako ostatní. Omilostnění zdarma a plné odpuštění, milost cestou a sláva na konci — to vše Spasitel zaslíbil dát. Ale nikdy neslíbil, že nebudeme mít soužení. Miluje nás příliš mnoho, aby nám zaslíbil něco takového. Skrze soužení nás učí mnoha vzácným lekcím, které bychom se jinak nikdy nenaučili. Soužením nám ukazuje naši prázdnotu a slabost, přitahuje ke trůnu milosti, pročišťuje naše city, odstavuje nás od tohoto světa a působí v nás touhu po nebi. To ráno při vzkříšení řekneme, „k dobrémuť jest mi to, že jsem pobyl v trápení.““
